Accessories with a Message

Good Morning and happy Monday, lovelies! Hope all of you had a great weekend and got some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Recently, one of my co-workers passed on an article about former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and her unique collection of brooches. I found it so interesting that I wanted to share it with you guys:
During her diplomatic tenure, Madeleine Albright found that brooches not only added a feminine touch to her male-dominated world of politico, but could also send strong messages. So much so, that her brooches--or pins as she prefers to call them--became a communication device, a visual element that offered some insight into her mood or reflection on the day's events.

She might have worn a balloon to symbolize high hopes, a turtle to convey frustration with the slowness of peace talks, or a crab to symbolize her aggravation with government policies. While Albright has been a longtime collector of pins, they didn't take on political significance until 1994 while she served as America's ambassador to the United Nations. The Iraqi press referred to her as "a serpent" after she criticized Saddam Hussein's refusal to cooperate with UN weapons inspectors, so for her next meeting with Iraqi officials, she wore a pin featuring a gold snake coiled around a branch.

In February 1996, when Cuban fighter pilots shot down two unarmed civilian aircrafts off the coast of Florida, Albright wore a bluebird pin, with the soaring bird's head pointing down instead of up to honor the pilots killed.

For Middle East peace negotiations, Albright often wore a gold dove to symbolize the hope for peace in the Holy Land. This pin was a gift from the widow of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

For a meetins with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Albright wore a trio of monkey pins symbolizing "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," offering unspoken commentary on Russia's role in human rights violations in Chechnya.

While former president George Bush famously quipped, "Read my lips," Albright frequently told reporters to "Read my pins."

An aptly-named collection of Albright's brooches, called "Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection," opens February 15 and runs through May 31 at the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas. The collection's companion book by Albright Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box details the stories behind the pins.

The pin collection debuted in September at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Little Rock will be the first stop for the traveling exhibit, which heads to Washington D.C., this summer and to Indianapolis in the fall of 2010.

"Read My Pins" features more than 200 of Albright's pins-- some she purchased herself during her many travels abroad, and others given to her by family, friends, royalty, heads of state and world leaders. The pins are grouped into 60 panels that detail Albright's early life, career and family.

Just goes to show how even a staunch political figure is just one more girl who loves her jewelry.
P.S.- Happy Birthday to my dear pal Aimee today! She's my super talented, artsy, painter friend and by far the coolest red head you'll ever meet : ) May all your b-day dreams come true, girlie-poo!

Project Runway and V-Day Goodness

Happy Friday! First thing's first, let's talk Project Runway, shall we?

Last night's winner was none other than the fabulous Anthony! It was love at first sight when I laid eyes on his stunning robin's egg blue dress. It was perfectly sewn and visually interesting, a winning combination in P.R. land.

Anthony's face was priceless when Heidi announced that he won. Love this man!

Poor Anna was sent home though. Her sad little shorts/vest/ blousy shirt combo was not enough to keep her on the catwalk for another week. I kind of felt bad for her, because she mis-sized the shorts for her model and ran out of time to fix them.

But anywho, let's talk about the weekend.
And it's not just any old weekend that's upon us...it's Valentine's Day.

Red and pink are both super-awesome colors and frankly, anything looks better covered in paper doilies. Other neat things about V-Day...

...everything is covered in chocolate. That's always a plus.

You can wear bright pink lipstick...

...or funky T-shirts with mazes and hearts

...or, ummmm, cover your face in pearls?? (that'd be Lady Gaga's version of Valentine's Day make-up, BTW)

You can play peek-a-boo behind a pair of warm, red mittens...

...create a really impressive-looking red centerpiece for your table...

...or paint an amoire in V-Day colors...

...buy yourself some pretty flowers...

...and bake heart-shaped everything.

I hope you have a chocolate-covered, cream-filled weekend.

Muah!! (that's the sound of me blowing you a kiss )

XOXO,

Down the Rabbit Hole

Hello lovelies! I hope everyone is as excited as I am that it's Thursday, because tonight is Project Runway/wine night at my apartment! One of my good girl friends is coming over to watch Heidi and Tim and all the fashion drama, so it will undoubtedly be a great time.

I hated to miss Trend Watch Wednesday yesterday, but we were filming a set of videos for a new website at work, so your girl was ten kinds of busy!

Bet you can guess by the title what this post is about, huh? I'm impatiently awaiting the release of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland with baited breath. I heart Tim Burton and his genius style of directing.

Even our friends at Sephora are getting pumped for this movie. They are featuring a make-up palette by Urban Decay that is totally inspired by the vivid colors in Alice in Wonderland. I've heard it's sold out right now, but as soon as it's back in stock, I'm buying!

Who can you expect to see in Burton's new flick? Well, for starters, Johnny Depp is playing the Mad Hatter, which is enough reason for me to go see the movie. Anne Hathaway is playing the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter will take on the role of the formidable Queen of Hearts and newcomer Mia Wasikowska will be Alice. I'm also excited about Alan Rickman lending his vocal talents to the Caterpillar and Crispin Glover's interpretation of the Knave of Hearts, (featured below.)

If these photos are a hint of what's to come, this movie will be very, very cool.

Will you be catching Alice in Wonderland in theatres? What character are you most excited to see?

Tomorrow's Forecast
I've been avoiding Valentine's Day posts like the bubonic plague, but since it will be Friday AND since we're celebrating the "Day of Love" here at work, I guess I'll do some sort of pink/red/heart-filled post. Haha, sigh...

The Return of Cravings Corner

Hey ya'll! Guess what? We got practically no snow, so I don't have to preface today's post with a weather complaint. I knew you'd be glad : )

I haven't done a Cravings Corner in forever, so I thought it was about darn time to do a post. Here are a few things that I would love to have in my life right now:

This looks SO heavenly! Divine. Scrumptious. Delectable. There really aren't enough words to describe the beauty of this cake.

In fact, I'm not even sure it's cake; I'd actually consider it a work of art. You can even get the recipe here.

Oh, I die.

2. A Wall of Chanel Products

I came across this photo on {this is glamorous} the other day and it made me want to run out and buy a bunch of Chanel and put it on display. I love the shelves and the way everything is showcased like at a store. I'm pretty sure a nice organized bathroom like this one would make my life complete.

3. Girl Time

I'm ready for a night out with the girls! Lucky for me, this evening is Jr. League night, so I'll get a chance to see my fave ladies and share some wine and gossip. So ready...

4. A Turquoise Chandelier

One of my new blogger friends Ludmila, from Creamy Life, posted about House of Turquoise the other day. I just had to check it out for myself, as I'm a big fan of anything/everything turquoise. H.O.T. (cute acronym, huh?) is a blog totally dedicated to the color turquoise. Love it! I'll take either one of these fantabulous chandeliers, please.

5. A Creamy, Dreamy Dress

I've really wanted to find the perfect flesh toned dress for awhile now, but just haven't found one that spoke to me. Until now. This dress did and she said, "Buy me, Leslie!"

It's by Paul & Joe Sister and it's fab-tastic.I don't know where in the world I would wear this, but with a dress like this, I'd find a place. And really, do we girls really need an excuse to get dolled up? I think not.

So that's that. A few things I'm craving this week. What's on your list? Maybe the new Kenneth Jay Lane pearl earrings? A rich cup of hot cocoa? Bradley Cooper?

Tomorrow's Forecast:
Trend Watch Wednesday, ladies!
