Becoming a Mrs. (Life-Changing, Yet Not Really)

Jeremy Cavness Photography

This time last year, I was adjusting to the concept of being an engaged lady. I had a shiny, emerald cut stunner on my left hand and a copy of Martha Stewart Weddings in the backseat of my car. I was over the moon to start our married life together...and honest-to-God, there still isn't a day that goes by where I don't get goosebumps thinking about the future with Stephen.

.............................................................................................

I wondered several times about the degree to which being married would change me, if at all.

Would I become a different person? I didn't think so.

Would I suddenly have an urge to decorate for every major holiday? Yes. But then again, I did before.

Would I start spending my weekends in sweats and t-shirts, sans make-up? No. But then again, I didn't before.

Would I cook dinner for us vs. going through Chick-Fil-A after work in the evening? I hoped. For our waistlines and for my street cred as a wife.

Would I change my name on Facebook? Duh. I couldn't wait!

..........................................................................................................

Truth is, being married doesn't feel a whole lot different than being engaged.

We spent loads of time together before September 17th, (okay, we practically lived together). We ate most dinners together. We visited each other's families on the weekends together. We shopped for the boat (our first major purchase) together.

I've heard a lot of women say they felt like they cashed in some form of their identity when they tied the knot. Honestly, I don't think it has to be that way. I still blog, (a hobby which my husband proudly supports), I still wear make-up on days when we're just bumming around the house, I still hang out with my momma (something I was afraid might decrease significantly when I got married.)

We still go on dates, we still text and email throughout the day, we still work out together.

If anything has changed since we got married, it has only been for the better. My favorite time of the day is when Stephen gets home (he gets off work a bit later than I do and I office out of our home) and we spend an hour just hanging out and having a glass of sweet tea in the kitchen, chatting about our day.

We cook together, too. This I love. It is almost better than shopping for Manolos. Maybe better.

He chops the garlic; I cube the chicken. The planets align.

The less glamorous things in life are still eons better with your spouse. Paying bills, (something I did before as a single lady) is a bit more fun when you can spontaneously burst into a Journey songs with each other to break up the monotony of stamping envelopes and writing checks.

So what has changed? Well, for starters, I have a new last name. I have to admit, I'd been "Double L" for so long that trading in my "L" initial was a little sad. But then again, my husband carries an Italian last name and now I can pretend I'm a mob wife, a definite plus in my book.

I always have a fridge of ingredients from which we can prepare actual meals. During the stag days, my food inventory usually amounted to half a stick of butter, an out-of-date carton of yogurt and bottled water. Now that I cook, we take trips to the grocery store to buy ingredients for a week's worth of meals at a time. (Did you know that's possible?!)

I get excited over things like kitchen towels, Tupperware and new laundry detergent with added Stain Boosters (!!).

We have a medicine cabinet. With medicines for darn near everything. We rarely get sick, but I attribute this to the nasty case of nesting that came with moving into a new home. It seemed appropriate to buy bookoos of Advil and Prilosec. Don't ask me why. (But hey, if you happen to be over at our house for dinner and are in desperate need of Claritin with a side of Robitussin, we've got ya covered.)

We enjoy watching Dateline: Murder Without a Cause and load the coffeemaker before we go to bed.

(As I'm typing this, I'm realizing how geriatric and boring we sound. You're probably wondering when we plan to get hip replacements and dentures.)

Sure, there are times we want to strangle each other have pleasant disagreements.

But oh how I love that man. The way he turns up the heat in the house when we wake up in the morning, just so I won't have to shiver in the bathroom. Or the way he is able to make a really bad situation a not so bad situation by impersonating a cast member from Jersey Shore and subsequently causing me to laugh so hard I can't breathe.

Last week, I was waxing and waning about how my hair would look like a poorly constructed bird's nest throughout the entire month of March. (Due to the upcoming surgery, I won't be able to raise my arms over my head for a few weeks. I know, it's splendid.)

Without missing a beat, he goes, "I can wash it for you. And dry it. And I've watched you poof it. I can definitely do that, too. Don't worry. We'll get your hair fixed."

Then, thinking about what he may have just gotten himself into...

"Or I'll drive you over to that nice salon every day if we have to."

And then I realized. That's how my life has changed. I have an "other half". When one of us goes down, the other one steps in to save the day.

Or poof our hair.

I Said 'Yes'

Exactly one year ago today, Stephen got down on one knee and asked a question that changed my life. Would I be his wife? You bet your Kate Spade slingbacks I would.

2011 was the best year of my life.

I always identified worldly success by the status of my career, the size of my waistline and the amount of money I had in the bank. Strange things happen though when you fall in love, though. It makes you re-think and re-evaluate every priority, every decision you make.

All I want in this world is to succeed in this marriage. I want Stephen to know every day that he matters more to me than life itself.

Next weekend, my paternal grandparents will be celebrating 60 years of marriage. They've celebrated 60 New Year's Eves together.

Here's to celebrating 59 more with Stephen.

Be blessed in 2012, lovelies-

A Blonde Wedding: {Rehearsal and Rehearsal Dinner}

I'm so excited to finally get to share pics from the wedding with y'all! I decided to start with the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner pics and just go chronologically throughout the whole weekend, then on to the honeymoon...makes sense, I guess : )

My fabulous SIL Sarah was gracious enough to take pics of our rehearsal, so these come courtesy of her!

First, we have to talk fashion...I was in LOVE with my rehearsal dinner outfit! The dress is by Judith March and it's called the Keyhole Versatile Dress. I love the Judith March keyhole dresses because they allow you to change the collars out to create entirely new looks with the same dress. I wasn't crazy about the bright red collar that came with it, so I chose this one instead, the Stripes for Santana collar! The shoes are by Jessica Simpson, which I got on sale at Dillard's! The earrings are from Francesca's Collections.

We were married at Central United Methodist Church in Rogers (above) by our awesome Senior Pastor, Carness Vaughan. Pastor Carness has been so wonderful throughout the entire wedding planning process and was also our mentor and counselor throughout our marriage prep classes at church. I was so happy that he was available to marry us on the date we selected!

Saying our pretend vows

We're married! Welp, at least PRACTICING to be married, haha

Here's a shot of Ava the flower girl (our niece) and Cooper the ring bearer (my friend Rhyanne's little boy) as they practiced their walk. Things didn't exactly pan out during the actual ceremony with these kiddos, but they definitely worked it during rehearsal, haha!

Above is Stephanie, Stephen's youngest sister and my other new SIL, holding Ava and Lucas, our new little nephew. He is just the sweetest, best natured baby and definitely makes me excited for the day when we have our own little bambinos : )

After the rehearsal, we drove to Copeland's, site of the rehearsal dinner. We chose this place because the food is amazing and it was also where Stephen and I had our first date : )

This is my brother's sweet girlfriend Lauren, holding Cooper our ring bearer. She is so pretty and sweet and I think Cooper thought so, too! Haha! He seriously is just the cutest little kid...gaw!

So that's all for today! I'm going to try to space out these wedding pic days so that y'all don't get tired of all the wedded bliss : ) Coming up Thursday, we're heading to the salon! Pics of myself and the bridesmaids getting ready on the day of the wedding...fun times!

I'm Baaaaack...and Married!

Well y'all, I'm a married lady now! Woot woot!

I'm L-O-V-I-N-G married life so far and have never felt so happy in my life...fo' realz, girls, this whole husband/wife thing is great! I get to go to bed and wake up with my best friend....what could be better than that?

We had the most perfect wedding day and reception and the honeymoon, OH MY WORD Y'ALL...bliss.

I really need to thank all of you girls both here and in Twitter world for your support and prayers on the wedding day. The outpouring of encouragement from the blog community never ceases to amaze me.

Of course since it has only been a little over a week since our wedding day, we don't have our professional pics ready yet, but I'll be posting shots from the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, as well as some candid shots of my bridesmaids and I getting ready the day of the wedding....so fun!

Oh and my bridal pics....those are coming up Friday : )

I'm really trying like the dickens to get through my email inbox, but it's slow going. So if you sent me an email during the past two weeks and haven't gotten a response, rest assured that I haven't missed you, just haven't gotten a chance to reply yet.

I'm also taking a break from e.Styles for a while, while we adjust to married life. I'm taking the next couple of months and just enjoying the evenings with my new hubby instead of pounding away on the computer keyboard for hours. I love doing e.Styling, but it's time to take a break and concentrate on this new season of life right now. I know y'all understand! I'll still be doing in-person styling here in Fayetteville, but the e. stuff was just taking up so much time at night that I felt like I really needed to unplug from that for a while.

Ah, so much to tell y'all about! Stay tuned and bear with me this week as I nudge back into the blogging world, girls! Again, thanks for the well-wishes and oodles of congrats that you all sent us - much, MUCH love!

Be blessed, lovelies-

One Year Later

On this very Friday only one year ago, my now-fiancee Stephen picked me up for what would be the last First Date of our lives.

We had spoken twice that week leading up to the Big First Date, both conversations lasting 2+ hours each. I already felt like I knew so much about him, but still had major butterflies because, let's face it, he's a hottie : )

I left work half an hour early to head home and start getting ready. I primped in the bathroom for 2 hours, making sure my dress was perfect, my hair was in place and my make-up was sweat proof and flawless.

He picked me up promptly at 7:00 p.m.....actually scratch that. He was 5 minutes early. Which, as Patty the Millionaire Matchmaker would say, is a good sign.

I'll never forget the way I felt when I first laid eyes on him. It was like 6 feet and 170 pounds of light and positivity walked through my front door. It was as if God said at that moment, "Screw all those bad dates and not-so-nice guys before. This is the one for you. It's your turn to be happy."

I was immediately comfortable and at ease, knowing full well he was a legitimate guy with good intentions.

We went out to dinner at Copeland's, a New Orleans style restaurant that's close to where we live. I really don't remember how the food tasted, the specials, or anything else about the restaurant. But I can tell you exactly what he wore, what he said and the way I felt staring at him from across the table.

We saw a movie after dinner and then he walked me up to my door at the end of the night. A perfect, southern gentleman. (The beauty of this date is in the details, but those memories are ours : )

Two days later, we were hanging out again, watching True Blood and playing with Ari (our dog) in the backyard.

We've never been apart since.

Did I know I'd marry him the moment I saw him? Yes. (And I've always made fun of people that said that.)

As I type this, it's amazing how my life has done a 180 in just 365 short days. We're only 50 days away from our wedding and sometimes I have to pinch myself to remember that this is reality. It's true what my mom (and Flannery O'Conner) always said - a good man is hard to find, but they're out there.

My favorite things about Stephen are his sense of humor, his wit, the way he can work a room full of people, his kindness, his love for God, the way he treats his momma, his honesty, his loyalty to the Chicago Cubs and the Arkansas Razorbacks, the way he treats his little niece Ava, the way he makes me feel pretty, (even when I'm wearing gym shorts and tennis shoes), his homemade spaghetti sauce, his dedication to our relationship....

In other words, I'm still smitten.

One year later.

P.S.- These babies popped up on my desk yesterday after I got back from lunch. Two dozen red roses polished off with white cala lillies for moi. He's spoiling me rotten!

Be blessed, lovelies-

Bridal Shower Pics...Finally!

Did everyone have a great holiday weekend? We sure did! We did lots of nothing which, in my book, is the BEST thing to do. We did catch an amazing fireworks show on Saturday at Beaver Lake. It’s funny, I used to HATE fireworks when I was little because they were so loud and hurt my ears. Now that I’m older though, I love them!

I'm not one for wearing obscene amounts of red, white and blue. I mean, I love my country but would prefer not to look like a walking jello mold. Instead, here was my attempt at Fourth of July style...ya like? The top is from a local store called Belle Boutiqe and the brand is Cierce. The jeans are by Joe's Jeans in the Muse style, from here.

I also did some very, very loose waves with my new Hot Tools curling iron. You can see by the pic above that it fell pretty quick in this terrible Arkansas humidity, but this pic was taken (and Tweeted) right when I got to work Friday morning:

These are a week late, but I still thought y’all might like to see them. These are pictures from my first of two bridal showers. This one took place in my hometown where I grew up, Heber Springs, AR! We started the weekend on the lake in Heber...Greers Ferry lake, to be exact. We took my parents out on Stephen's boat and it was SO pretty!

King Stephen on his skis...showing off
Sunset on Greers Ferry Lake...God painted us a beautiful picture that night : )

This picture cracks me up because you can see my brother Matthew bobbing on his skis in the background, haha!

The next day, it was on to the shower! I was so taken aback by how pretty the church kitchen looked when we arrived. The hostesses really outdid themselves on decorations...so pretty!

Me with all of the hostesses!

One of my dearest and most longtime friends Sarah was the hostess. She and her mom and several other ladies did such an amazing job putting everything together.

Me and  beautiful Sarah

One of our good family friends Cathy made the cupcakes. She is so professional and we always tell her she should quit teaching (she is a schoolteacher) and open a bakery. They tasted as good as they look!

YUMMMM!

Funny story, my cousins in Denver, CO couldn’t be at the shower, so they mailed my gift. They packed it in a diaper box as a joke and it was SO funny to open it up! There were so many confused faces in the crowd…haha! Don’t worry, it will be a few years before we’ll be having THAT kind of shower, haha!

Oh my!

Opening up my KitchenAid mixer!

The food tables were just so pretty!

My grandma (Claudia), my mom, me, Stephen's mom (Frances), my Memaw (Loretta) and Stephen's grandma (Geraldine)

Me and my mama, Isn't she pretty? I love her : )

Sarah's precious little girl, Emmalynn (how much do y'all love that name?)

Anywho, hope y'all had a great weekend! You'll get to see more bridal shower pics in a couple of weeks after my next shower in Fort Smith hosted by Stephen's family! Ha!

Eleven Month Anni + Pics!

Happy Friday, Blonde Ambitioners! I'm super jealous of those of you who are off work today...sadly, I am not : ( But, I'm making the best of it and trying to focus on that fact that I have a three day weekend. Woo and hoo!

Yesterday Stephen and I celebrated our 11 month anniversary. 11 months ago yesterday, we went on our first date here in Northwest Arkansas!

Last night we celebrated by getting all gussied up and going to our favorite Mexican restaurant, Abuelo's. We believe that special moments in life are to be celebrated with copious amounts of cheese dip and salsa : ) We ended the evening by playing with our furry son, Ari. We figured 11 months should be a family affair, haha.

We cracked up at this pic...he looks pitiful!

I know this is riveting stuff, but y'all gotta understand, I am so utterly grateful for the turn my life has taken in such a short time.

(I treat this blog like a personal journal, so I'm going to get a little deep and sappy....feel free to skim down to the pics, haha)

I never knew one's life could change so drastically in only 11 months, but I'm living proof that it can. In fact, I was thinking of where I was at this time last year. I was actually headed to Memphis with a friend for a fun girls' weekend. We did have a great time, but I remember thinking of how much I would love to have a special someone to watch the fireworks with the next year.

Well, I guess God decided it was time to send a fireworks watching companion my way. A mere 15 days later on July 15, 2010, I learned of S's existence and he of mine. On July 30, we went on our first date.

My life has never been the same since.

This weekend we intend to take the boat out, eat some burgers and....watch some fireworks.

Together.

Be blessed, lovelies-

Bridal Shower Weekend Recap: {Part 1}

Hey girls! Welcome back from the weekend!

As you probably know, Stephen and I went to Heber Springs, (where I grew up), this past weekend for my first of two bridal showers. We had a little snafu with downloading the pics from my mom's camera, so the actual shower pics are coming later this week.

I will however show you the pics that did download correctly!

After the shower on Saturday, we all headed out on the lake for a sunset cruise on Stephen's boat. My Memaw and Papaw (my dad's parents) joined us and we had a ball!

Captain Stephen : )

Memaw, Papaw, Me and Stephen

A good lookin' couple!

If you live in Arkansas and have never been to Heber Springs or Greers Ferry Lake, I highly suggest you do so. True, I'm a little biased since that's my hometown, but it really is one of the prettiest places in our state.

Here is a pic I snapped of little Max on Saturday night...my parents have this antique stove as a decoration in their house and he LOVES to sleep underneath it.

Hopefully I'll get the actual shower pics on here by Wednesday or Thursday. My mom is having to burn them to a CD and send them via snail mail, so I'm having to be patient. That's hard stuff for a Type A like myself, haha!

Here's a sneak peek though...my shower outfit taken with my iPhone. Sorry for the blurriness!

And finally, I wanted to show y'all my new scarf I got from Francesca's. It was only $18 and is SO cute, I think! I paired it with an old black tank and jeans on Friday and it really spruced up the outfit. Get one for yourself here.

That's it. A random mix of pics from our weekend. Stay tuned for the bridal shower pics later in the week!

Be blessed, lovelies-
