Trend Watch Wednesday: Figure Flattery

Happy Hump Day, Blonde Ambitioners! Trend Watch Wednesday is here and this week, I want to focus on trendy styling for your body type. Some body shapes are a bit easier to dress than others, but there is definitely a shape that will work for every girl. You just have to find it.

So let's get to it...

Petite

Petite stars like Rachel Bilson tend to wear dresses that are shorter in length, but not too tight. A short dress will give tiny girls a much longer leg line and will create the illusion of height. Petite chicks should steer clear of any overly baggy dresses, or else she will look like she's wearing a flour sack.

Recreate Rachel's winning look with this dress from Alice + Olivia.

Pear

Ladies with fuller hips should try a high neckline that broadens the look of the shoulders, like JLo does here. Boatnecks, cowl-necks, crew-necks and square necklines work well for this sexy shape.

Try this dress from Elizabeth and James to look as perfect as Jennifer Lopez.

Hourglass

Girls with Coke-bottle curves can rock just about any look. I love what Kim Kardashian has done here with a shirt dress and thick belt. Basically any dress that cinches at the waist and flows around the hip area will work perfectly.

Just check out Exhibit A, by Free People.

Pencil

Long, lean body types should aim to add shape and volume to their figures. Although dramatic, this dress worn by Blake Lively does a great job of drawing attention to her shoulders and emphasizes her long legs. To add shape, try mini dresses with high shoulders (like hers), or blousy, bo-ho styles.

Take some notes from Blake's stylists with a dress like this, from Antik Batik.

I'm sort of a hybrid Pencil/Petite body type. I've got a small frame, but longer limbs like the pencil shape (haha). I would kind of compare my body to Gossip Girl's Taylor Momsen...I think she has great style and it's always very wearable.

So what styles look best on you? Do you have a celebrity body-type twin that you look to for style inspiration?

  2. Now to figure out what body type I truly do have. My definition is just 'bumpy' - haha! I think if we dressed to flatter our body type we'd have more attractively dressed people. Not everyone can dress like Paris or Kim K. and look as good as them. It's what works for you! Same with hairstyles and face shapes!
    Good post, Lady!

  4. Love all of those dresses, esp. the ideas for the pear shape and hourglass (since I'm a cross between those)!

  5. Like Katie said, I am also a mix of hourglass and pear, so I like those ideas!

  6. I'm a bit petite so glad to see that I'm wearing the right tight of dresses, even though I don't like my knees to show. I love Taylor's style!

  7. I am absolutely a pencil... I'm never sure what looks best. I avoid vnecks, because I have no bust and a vneck just makes it worse. I tend to like empire waists and rouching or some sort of detail around the bust because it gives the illusion I have some shape :)
