I Hate My Hair

via Pinterest
Okie dokie, I’m going to start by saying that I am positively sick of my hair. (Was the post title a little obvious?)

I feel like the color is just blah and the cut leaves much to be desired. Because I know that my stylist does not read this blog, I will say that I think it’s about time to find a new hairdresser.

Additionally, I’m not sure I’m cut out (no pun intended) for really long hair. It’s fun and I love how long hair makes one feel so utterly feminine, but OH MY LORDY does it ever take forever to dry and style. Example: I washed it Wednesday and by the time I was done drying it with the blow dryer and round brush, I was sweating and cursing (sorry Mom- I know you taught me better).

Pros of Current Long Hair

-My friend’s little boy told me the other day when my hair was down and fixed in loose waves that I looked like a “pin-cess” (i.e. princess). I’m not sure if it was the styled hair or the fact I was wearing bookoos of pink, but I’ll take looking like a princess any day of the week. Albeit, most days I look like a “pin-cess” that has combed her hair with a weed eater.

-On the rare day that my hair does cooperate with my Chi iron and the humidity is low, I love how my mane looks. It is on these days that I want to take 20 iPhone pics and send them out into Twitterland to prove that my hair isn’t always a hot mess.

-I can curl it without it looking like Little Orphan Annie.

Cons of Current Long Hair

-It takes eleventy million hours and lots of patience to blow dry and fix. Patience that I do not possess.

-My mom was a fabulous hairdresser for many years in our hometown and I fear that when people see me back home, they will think poorly of her because she taught me everything I know about hair. (Far fetched, but that’s how my mind works.)

-My hair is super thick and I think that just by cutting off 5 inches or so would result in at least a 5lb weight loss.

After September 17th (my wedding day), I do believe I’ll be cutting several inches off of it. (Unless I chicken out. And there’s a 99.99% chance that will happen.) I’d do it sooner, but the style I’m sporting for the wedding requires long hair.

I think women that have the rocks to pull off short hair are awesome. And I would like to be awesome.

So because I stink at making major decisions alone, I’ve put a poll up on my side nav appropriately titled, “Should Leslie cut her hair after the wedding?” Please go vote. You will win nothing, but perhaps it will give you the satisfaction of knowing you helped out a blogger friend with one of the toughest decisions that we ladies face.

Help a sister out, ya’ll. I need some opinions!

Be blessed, lovelies-

  1. I think your hair is gorgeous, BUT I know what it's like to dread fixing your hair every morning sooo if you want to cut it (after the wedding of course) then go for it!

I always say it's just hair- and it WILL grow back! :)

  2. Love love love your blog- you make me laugh and of course any wedding talk is a girl's best friend....even after being married for almost 3 years:)

I think you should keep your long hair! I have crazy long locks now and I would not trade them for the world!
I do hate the drying and styling part- but I only wash every 4 days (more if needed of course)! This may sound gross or crazy, but dry shampoo has saved my life :) I use batiste and it does a fantastic job and is easy on my wallet.

My last post talks about my hair a little. I've had short and long- and I gotta admit, my long hair is just easier! Not to mention that long fancy ponytails are in, in, in right now!

  3. I love your hair! I had super short hair and it felt like it took forever to grow out. I have to agree though I hate being sweaty and gross after I shower just from drying my hair!

  4. Try Kelly Cooper at Studio 8. She's super super amazing.

  5. I'm growing my hair out too and your pros and cons are similar to the ones in my head. Glad others struggle with their hair. Mine always looks so undone while others around me look so done!

  6. I have long-ish hair and I've been considering the same thing. I don't want super short, but I'm tired of whatever this is. I'm afraid though, that because my hair is thin and fine if i cut it, it'll just stick straight out because it has no weight. So I'm afraid of bunches of things, it'll stick out, it'll look awful, the husband will hate it (he says he's ready for a change in my hair too tho...)...argh. Good luck! If you decide to cut it - make sure and get before and after photos so we can all copy the awesome.

  7. My hair takes a long time to grow (2 years to get from above my shoulders to my chest), but after I got married I thought it would be so much easier to cut it short again and I'd look edgy and hot...not so much. I HATE it. I miss my long hair. I felt so much more Southern with long hair. So now I pop vitamins everyday trying to get it to grow! Then again it is JUST hair so whatever you decide have fun with it! Good luck!

  8. I'm in a major hair slump too! I actually grabbed the scissors yesterday and took matters into my own hands but I still need help. I forsee a BIG trim in the next couple months. Your hair is thick. It will probably look good any way you do it. I am a fan of long hair myself.....growing mine out is taking FOREVER hence the irritation hence the chop hence it never grows.

  9. Cut it! If you decide you want it long again...just grow it back out. That is my favorite part of hair. You can practically do anything you want becuase it isn't permanant.

  10. i had super long hair a few years ago. chopped 10" off right after my wedding and then went into major hair withdrawl. so if you decide to do it, maybe do it in stages, so you can adjust. who knows, you might find an in-between length that suits you.

Sidenote: I grew my hair back out after that and now its just as long as it used to be. and yes, its a pain, but i love it.

Oh, also, two other tips, see if your stylist can "thin" it out, i have super thick hair, and my stylist actually thins out layers (invisible to the eye, but you can feel the difference). I also got a Brazilian Blowout last year which cut my drying time down to LITERALLY 5 minutes. pricey but worth the shorter drying time and being able to ditch my flat iron!

  11. I'm just the opposite. I haven't had long hair in years, so I've decided to grow it out (probably at the wrong time cause summer is almost here). I feel like it's always a catch 22. You have long hair, you want short, you have short you want long. But you should definitely cut it.. it will always grow back =]
    Good luck!

  12. Although I'm sure your long is lovely...I vote cut it :) You might love it to death, it will surely be less maintenance, and in the end it's just hair! It will grow back :) I bet you'll look super cute with a chic short cut

  13. You're adorable and hilarious! I have no advice for you because my hair is a pinned up hot mess day in and day out... I don't put too much effort into my hair at all. I do strongly believe in efficiency as a woman {hence the pin-up}... if short hair will be easier for your lifestyle then so be it! Good luck!

  14. I hate my long hair too, so I decided to cut it short since it is already summer. It will grow back so there's no need to worry.

  15. Good luck with you decision! I have very long hair, but mine's super fine and thin so it doesn't bother me so much. I can do a lot with it. I live in West Florida and it's in the 90s-100s May through September with 90% humidity so I feel your pain!

I just saw your wedding date of September 17th. My husband and I got married last year on September 18th :) Great time of year if ya ask me, except the Hogs were playing Georgia that day and he was very upset that he had to miss that game, lol! ;)

  16. I love your hair!! You would be gorgeous with long or short hair though! I have long hair and it does get annoying how long it takes to dry. But my secret is I only wash it every other day, tresemme dry shampoo or a little bit of baby powder on your roots can be your best friend! :) I use it every other morning and no one can believe I skipped washing it. But if you decide to cut it after the wedding I can't wait to see, I know it will be adorable!!

  17. i got around 8 inches cut off last year and i will never let it get that long again. the shorter cut has cut the time of fixing it completely in half. i can sleep longer in the mornings now!

  18. Just discovered your blog, you are hilarious! Love it! I have loooong hair and constantly have the "to cut or not to cut" bdebate with myself. I am dying for a short angled bob, but I am such a chicken! Even though we've only just "met", I vote cut it...then at least you know and can always grow it back! And maybe it will help boost my confidence to go for the chop as well! :-)

  19. well....you know what i think, because i totally commented the other day about how great i think you would look with short hair! just do it!! it always grows back :)

  20. I am so with you on the hair thing. I have long thick hair and it takes forever and a day to dry it. But I love it long :)

  21. Girl, I feel ya. I'm getting so tired of the same old same old. Once summer starts, I'm celebrating by whacking mine off!

  22. I think you need to step away from the CHI. I know it is hard, but the minute I got a T3 styling iron my life changed. Seriously, CHIs are not what they used to be since they started mass producing them in Mexico. I hope this helps :)

  23. AHH I totally know where you're coming from!! Especially living where I do, having my thick long mane sometimes is such a pain in my you know what - howeverrrr.... I will say that a couple years ago I cut 8 inches off and while I loved it for about 3 weeks. Afterward I was DYING to have my hair back. AND when you have short hair you do have to fix it EVERY day - you can't just throw it up into a bun or ponytail like you can with long hair. I would say keep your hair, just from my experience.. but there are some good alternatives now like extensions if you do go short! I'm excited to see what you decide!

  24. I know how you feel. My long hair is so frustrating but when I have short hair I want it long. The best thing about long hair is the sidebraid and top knot. always looks cute.

  26. I am currently going through this same thing. I really want my hair in a bob. I am so sick of long hair. I would love it if I wasn't hair retarded but I am. I feel like if I had shorter hair I'd actually do my hair. Half of the time my hair is in a ponytail. I think you will look great either way but I have no doubt in my mind you can pull of a shorter do!

  27. I cut my hair a few weeks after my wedding and rocked shorter locks for over a year. I'm currently growing it out a little, just to the point where I can get it all into a ponytail, because I think that length will be easy and nice for breastfeeding and baby care when my BabyGirl arrives this September!
I definitely did not regret cutting my hair after the wedding - I'd moved from Canada in the winter (aka COLD) to Hawaii (aka warm all year) and I needed a bit of a style change :)

  28. I'm with you, I like shorter hair better. I grew mine out for my wedding and then chopped it all off right after, but once you have kids you have to be careful that your short hair doesn't look like a "mom" cut. Now that I have my daughter I can't cut my hair short anymore because I don't want to look like a soccer mom.

  29. lets just say i can sympathize with you. But i dont think i look good with shorter hair AT ALL so its basically always been below my shoulders. I understand the sweating and being exhausted after blowdrying the hair. Im in desperate need of a slight haircut but growing it out for a friends wedding and I have to be honest ive never been to a hairdresser that I love so if you can find one props to you! I always regret cutting my hair shorter so if you do, go a little at a time so you dont walk away totally regretting your decision to do the post wedding chop :)

  30. I'm sure someone else said it...but thin it! My hair is so thick when I get it thinned, I usually have more hair thinned out then cut off! It cuts down my drying time by 50% easily.

But, I totally understand the need to rock the short hair cuts! You could always work up to short in stages. Cut a few inches off each visit until you find the combination of length and drying time you like!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm in the same boat as you. I cannot wait to chop my hair off after this wedding! Mine is at the length where it's starting to look skanky. I think you have plenty of time before your wedding to cut off two or so inches! That's my advice!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I used to have long hair, about your length, and chopped it off and haven't grown it back since. I have incredibly thick hair but have truly fallen in love with the "lob"-long bobs-a line hair cuts and being able to dress up my hair in different ways. I totally think you could pull of shorter hair :) One other trick when you're getting your hair color is to make sure the desciription of the color you want is easy for the stylist to identify. I went dark for winter and added some blonde recently but didn't want to be brassy so I told her I wanted my blonde to be like the inside of a banana...it totally workd and my color is just what I wanted with tons of dimention. good luck, and remember that it's just hair-it'll grow back.

  33. I had been keeping my hair short for the last few years but in the past year I've let it grow out so I can have long layers. Maybe after your wedding you should cut it but leave the options open with long hair before the wedding!

  34. I love this post! It is so true, I have the very same issue. However I cut mine and I love it!

  35. As you know I just cut my hair and their are days that I miss it like crazy, but I love being able to just throw some soft hair curl in my hair like Bumble and Bumble and be on my way! It's great for the summer and so light, but I do admit, as I said, that I miss my long locks. It takes a while to grow back - but it can be done. I think you would look beautiful either way. Maybe a change might be nice.
