Keep Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'

Greetings and a good Monday mornin' to you! Did everyone have a good weekend? Did y'all do anything exciting/fun/incredibly adventurous?

So the topic of today's post is Roller Derby, (super random, right?)

Let me explain...

Ok, so last week I went bowling with a certain guy and we made a little bet that if he won, I would have to blog about Women's Roller Derby. I think he thought it would be way funny to make this fashionista blog about something totally unrelated to trends or style, (i.e. roller derby.)

So all week long, I talked a BIG game, but when it came down to it, I lost. Badly. Like I knocked down 13 pins total the entire night. Ouch.

And as a result, today's post is all about Roller Derby, haha.

Let's get one thing straight: I know NOTHING about roller derby, so to prepare for this post, I rented Whip It! on Saturday night, starring Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, Drew Barrymore and Kristen Wiig. The movie takes place in small-town Texas and is all about the female Roller Derby circuit.

By day, Ellen's character works at the Oink Joint, a local BBQ shack. By night, she dominates the roller derby track.
If you are in the mood for a light-hearted movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, you should definitely rent this. It was super funny and a total "girl power" movie. I won't lie, it almost made me want to strap on a pair of skates and hit the track.

On second thought, maybe I'll just stick to watching movies about roller derby. Pretty sure one elbow to the face and this princess would be bawling her eyes out on the sidelines : )

Anywho, I thought it would be fun to see what everyone's roller derby nicknames would be. I found a nickname generator online and it deemed me

Skatie Couric

How awesome is that? You can try it for yourself here.

I also came up with a team name, (on my own, with no help from a generator), which is

The Slice Girls

So yeah, if A Blonde Ambition ever starts a roller derby team, we will totally be the Slice Girls. I'm calling dibs on Baby Spice right now.

Since this is a fashion blog, I can't write about roller derby without talking about the outfits from Whip It! Ellen Page's team's name is the Hurl Scouts, so of course their uniforms look like scandalous Girl Scout uniforms, which I thought was hilarious.

A few fashion tips for looking like a legit roller derby chick, courtesy of the Hurl Scouts:

1. Wear lots of eyeliner. Kristen Wiig's character explains to Ellen Page's character that in order to look like a true derby girl, she needs to wear LOTS of black eyeliner. Nothing adds that extra layer of toughness quite like a smoky eye, I guess.

2. Get some fishnets. It goes without saying that if you're planning on hitting the roller derby track, you'll need a pair of fishnet stockings to complete the ensemble. So obvi.

3. Add some fake tats. A Blonde Ambition recommends something extra hard core like a large tiger or a band of barbed wire around the upper arm to add that extra edge to your roller derby look.

4. Bruises make great accessories. Let's face it, no roller derby chick would look legit without a few battle scars.

So here's your assignment for the day:

Visit the roller derby name generator and let me know what yours is in the comments field below. I cannot wait to see what your names are!

Alright, let's all go out and "whip" this Monday...ha...ha. Yeah, I'm just gonna quit while I'm ahead.

Be blessed, lovelies-

  1. Actually I am a retired Referee for roller derby. My derby Name is Hailey Hawkeye. I was involved for 3 years until a) life, and b) knees took over. I actually refereed the Western Division Championships in 2007. Roller Derby takes a great amount of time and dedication. In any case I enjoyed the movie – it was cute and occasionally struck a chord. I love seeing the sport gain more notice!

  6. I haven't seen Whip It but my husband has a co-worker who is in the local roller derby but has been out due to pregnancy so she hosts roller derby parties at her house. Its pretty fun to watch. They are hardcore.

PS: I suck at bowling too.

  7. So funny! Believe it or not, I actually went to my first roller derby match a couple of weeks ago with my dad. He didn't tell me where we were going (until we actually got there) in fear that I wouldn't go if I knew ahead of time, haha. Which, in actuality, is probably true... :) It was like nothing I'd ever seen. It made me hurt just watching. Yikes!! Definitely hardcore! You definitely "diversified" your blog with this post! ;)

  8. I've actually been so curious about this movie - I used to live behind a theater that held weekly roller derby tournaments, but I've actually never been to one.

My name is "Blackeye Betty". I kind of love it:)

  9. I had rented Whip It about a month ago with no expectations, and ended up loving it! I thought Ellen Page was perfect for the role.

My roller derby name was "Marsha Law." I already feel a littler tougher calling myself that :)
