Hair How-To: {Tousled Curls}

First of all, I struggled for a good eight minutes trying to figure out how to spell tousled because stinkin' Microsoft Word kept autocorrecting it, no matter how I spelled it. I finally settled on "tousled". If it ain't right, my apologies. I never claimed this was a mistake-free blog.

Please accept me, typos and all.

So what were we talking about? Oh, yes. Hair. Of the Tousled or Touseled variety.

I was going to originally post this under Trend Watch Wednesday, but this hairstyle has been hot-hot-hot for quite a while now. Thus, I’m not really sure it qualifies as a “trend”.

I tried some undone curls this past weekend and really liked how they turned out. After I walked out into the wind and humidity, my curls became waves, but honestly this made me like the style even more!

I’m no hair expert, so I’m leaving it to my favorite hairstyling video vixen LolaMarie7. She has the BEST hair tutorials out there and she’s super cute! I learned how to do my own undone curls/waves from this tutorial:

Not sure what brands of things that Lola uses, but I use all of the following to achieve my curls:

In case you learn better through step by step instructions, here’s a guide of how to get undone curls for yourself.

1. Start by spraying your whole head lightly with an iron guard. I prefer CHI’s 4A Iron Guard to protect against heat styling damage.

2. Next, section off your hair using a sturdy clip, like the Croc Clips featured above. I like to start with the bottom-most section of my hair.

3. To create a “curl”, grab a one-inch section of hair and using the curling iron or flat iron curl the hair away from the face. You’ll want to concentrate on the bottom four inches of the hair section, leaving the top few inches straight. This creates a much more modern wave than the traditional Shirley Temple curls…eep!

4. Repeat Step #3 all over your head through all of the sections until your whole head is done. If you have bangs, try sweeping them to the side or leaving them straight. Avoid curling super short layers or bangs as, once again, this can get really juvenile looking.

5. Finally, run your fingers through all of the curls to break them up and give them that undone look that is soooo hot right now.

6. I like to finish it off by lightly teasing my ‘do at the crown and around my side part to give my style extra volume.

7. Seal the deal with a quick mist of hairspray like my personal fav, Redken Forceful 23.

Clockwise left to right: Gretchen Rossi, Chanel Iman, Audrina Patridge, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Kerr,
all via Google Images.

This style works best with medium to thick hair, with normal to coarse texture, (very thin or fine hair tends to not hold curl as well.)

Lucky for me, my hair is similar in texture and thickness to that of an Alpaca. Therefore, this style works well for me.

Shoulder length hair or longer works best with any type of curl styling, as do hair cuts with lots of layers, which create fun dimension throughout the style.

Have fun touseling! Or touseleing!

Be blessed, lovelies-

  1. I'm better with step by step directions so Thank You! My hair is getting long enough now to do this and maybe it will stop me from putting it into a ponytail for the 5th straight day!

  6. I have fine hair and I wish it would hold a curl better! If I have high enough heat and curl it tighter (so when it falls out it's about the right wave) I can get there, but a lot of times it doesn't work out. Hairspray makes it fall out faster sometimes. Ugh, I will keep trying, it's my favorite style right now!

  7. Tousling, surely?

Love this style...as my hair waves naturally it's a doddle for me to achieve. :) Much more fun than poker straight, which takes hours!
