To Mom

In honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, I wanted to dedicate a post to my mom (Susan). Over the years, she’s had some pretty solid advice. Here are a few of my favorite gems of knowledge courtesy of my momma, the One and Only.

“Always hang jeans after washing instead of throwing them in the dryer.  They’ll last longer and maintain their color and shape longer.”

“Never go to the grocery store without make-up. The one time you skip it, that will be the day you run into everyone you know.”

“Write thank you notes.”

“He does dishes? Marry him.”

“Maintain a good relationship with your in-laws. Life will be abundantly better this way.”

“Make your own money, have your own career and contribute financially. Independence is something to hold on to, always. Married or not.”

“Spend two years just being married. You’ll never get that time back when it was only you and him. And you didn’t have to worry about a babysitter.”

“Enjoy your 27-year-old body. Wear what you want and ignore the critics. It’s likely they couldn’t pull it off anyway.”

“Stay out of the tanning bed.”

“Learn to say ‘no’ to people. It’s necessary for your sanity.”

“Don’t stick with a job you hate. Do what you love. Go after the opportunity that will challenge and satisfy you.”
Note: Coincidentally, I did. In March : )

“Take lots of pictures. You’ll need evidence someday to show your kids that you were once cool.”

“He should pay for dinner on the first three dates. If he doesn’t – run. Fast.”

...........................................

It’s funny. I was on I540 coming home the other day and some yayhoo veered into the other lane of traffic, almost taking out a whole mess of cars. Instead of shouting obscenities, I yelled, “That nut!” which really isn’t that funny, unless you know my Mom. This is her famous phrase when she’s driving in frenzied traffic.

I also realized that I sit just like her on the couch. Feet tucked neatly under my derriere, perched up like a bird.

I do my hair and make-up just like she always did. And in the same order.

We each think Brad Pitt has a nice bottom.

We have a penchant for manly men.

And Southern men. We prefer those, too.

We have the same shaped lips and blue eyes.

And freckles.

We believe that hair dye is essential to living.

 ...........................................

The older I get, the more I realize that I truly am becoming my mother. Which, in my book, is a pretty remarkable person to be.

Thanks for letting me borrow the best parts of you, Mom.

Be blessed, lovelies-
