Shrek and Straighteners

Watching movies in bed...does it get better than that?

Hey, hey, hey! How are y'all fairing on this Monday morning?

I'm so sad the weekend is over because, for us, it went by WAY too quickly. Friday night, we ordered pizza and watched True Blood episodes via Netflix.

Saturday, we did some chores and ran some errands before crashing on the bed to watch Shrek : ) We love us some Donkey!

Yesterday, we hit the gym and made chocolate pudding.

My life is thrilling and I know you are jealous. It's ok - really.

Anywho, in the midst of all of this excitement, I realized that my Chi iron had straightened its last strands. On Saturday, I tried to unplug, re-set and turn it on multiple times using various outlets before officially declaring it deceased.

Time of Death: 4:56 p.m., Saturday, August 6th.

It had been making an awful buzzing noise for some time and I knew it was only a matter of days before it kicked the bucket. I mean, I've had the thing since 2005. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning, (trash day.) I know you girls didn't personally know Chi, but nevertheless, I think I should say a few words:

Dear Chi,

You were a great friend, fabulous straightener and all around good guy.
You kept me frizz free for many an Arkansas summer.
You made my hair glisten, even that time I got those awful lowlights that made my hair all mousy.
You were with me through college, the start of my professional career and even traveled to Europe with me, though I was too afraid to plug you into one of those foreign, high-powered outlets.
You were greatly loved, and will be greatly missed.

So now it seems I'll have to find a replacement for le Chi. I really have enjoyed the Chi brand iron very much, but alas, am always in search of the next big thing! I've heard some great stuff about the T3 irons...

What kind of flat irons do y'all recommend? Should I stick with Chi or try a new brand?

Also, please feel free to say a few words about Chi below...I know y'all didn't know him, but he was a great guy.

Be blessed, lovelies-

  4. Oh my gosh, I am laughing so so hard...... because my hair straightener bit the dust this morning!!!! The connection was getting horrible and you had to hold it just so... and then this morning I went to go use it and there was a big huge spark and then the good awful smell. Yeah, RIP straightener. Can we hold a double funeral? It can be buried with yours, haha!!! I'm SO SO glad you posted this. Need some suggestions myself.

  6. RIP Chi. He will be joining mine in Chi Heaven...
I had a backup (just in case of emergency) but would like to try something new. Can't wait to see suggestions and what you get!

  7. That is a long & very full life for a chi. Over six years? I'm impressed. I returned the T3 right away after trying it. In my opinion there is too much plastic between the hot plates and the sides- so you can't get close enough to the root. I have the ghd Gold 1" and have been happy with it. :)

  8. I have been using the Maxiglide for years. It has really made a difference in my hair. I don't get split ends as quickly and it helps to tame the frizz.

  9. My Chi died about 6 months ago as well. So sad. But I ventured out and bought the Paul Mitchell...love it! It makes my hair more silky and there's a temp adjustment. My hairdresser recommends it as well. So far, it has worked GREAT with this 100% humidity in Florida. Good luck!

  11. HAHAAHAHA! I loved this. Hilar. I had to bury a chi once, too. It was a sad day. But it made it through 4+ years of college and then some. I ended up getting another chi, but a pink one. Ulta has them on sale for 99.95 I think right now? They have a blue sparkle glitter one too. Chi's go hard, stick with it!

  17. Poor Chi! :(

I had the same problem with mine. I did lots of research when mine died to find a really good straightener. My little high-end salon suggested HAI, as did my 2 cosmetologist friends.

I have never ever had a straightener that has worked better than my HAI does! Who knew my hair could be so smooth and shiny in half the time it did with my pink CHI!

  19. Sorry to hear about your chi kicking the bucket:( I once owned a chi and when mine died about 6 months ago I purchased the Rusk straightner. I absolutely love mine to me its alot like my chi.

  20. My co-worker swears by her Croc straightener the "wet to dry" version. Her hair looks amazing everyday and I am secretly hoping that my Chi dies so I can buy one for myself!

  21. As a fellow blondey, I'm alllll about my BaByliss Pro Nano Titanium Iron. The Chi would always tug and pull at my hair, but I never realized it until I discovered the beauty that it my BaByliss. Plus she's baby blue, heats up in like, ten seconds and she has long skinny panels! I love it! Just look at it!

    Good luck! Love your blog!

  22. I had 3 CHI's bite the dust... Next I bought an FHI which I LOVED! Until that one died on me too. I JUST purchased the GHD Professional 1" a couple weeks ago and l.o.v.e. it. And it has a 2 year warrenty. Ugh, it's always a sad day when a flat iron passes on... ;)

  23. I too have a Chi and I have a buried Chi. My buried Chi blew up one day when I plugged it in the wall. Adios Chi!!!! :)

  24. this cracked me up! So sorry about your death.

  25. Oh bless your heart. I have sent many a Chi off to straightener heaven. Seriously. I've owned at least 7 of them- regular, turbo, I've tried them all. But I have to agree with Verity Kae, the BaByliss Pro will change. your. life. I do not exaggerate. It is truly the BEST iron I have EVER used. It heats up quickly and has adjustable temps. I have some crazy hair and this one has been the best at keeping the frizz away in this Southern humidity. It's a bit pricier than the Chi but totally worth it in my opinion!
    Good luck!

  26. Funny straightener story. My friends and I all had Helen of Troy straighteners. I was in the car with a guy friend when I was talking to a girlfriend and asked her to "keep Helen plugged in." He had a strange look on her face and it turns out he thought I was talking about a vibrator named Helen...dumb boy, who shares vibrators and plugs then in?!?!?

  27. I have the T3 and I LOVE it! I've had it since 2005 too and it is still goin' strong!

  29. I've only ever had a Chi and it's been nothing but great!

  30. Chi WILL fix your straightener for $35 dollars and usually if they can't fix it they'll replace your straightener! I've done it twice already! :) If you want some info, let me know!! ;) I'll kinda share!

  31. I love my BaByliss Pro Nano Titanium Iron. I used a Chi before, but when it died, I had a stylist at Ulta recommend the BaByliss and I LOVE it! :o)

  33. Love this chi post!

I understand how can get attached! I have heard amazing things about ghd, and I've heard it adjust the temperature in milliseconds depending on what your hair needs?! I had a T3 blow dryer...died in one year...maybe the straighteners are different!

    Chi's are fabulous though.
