Celebrating Southern

I love being from the South, as over-the-top as we can be sometimes. I've seen a few of these little sayings floating around Pinterest lately and I thought it might be entertaining to blog a few of my own.

Although we southern folks can be a lot tad ridiculous and more than a little overzealous with our SEC football, I love our region of the United States nonetheless.

The List

-Instead of saying a girl is a train wreck, we just say "bless her heart." Works every time.

-The word "coke" simply implies a carbonated beverage, not necessarily the brand Coca-Cola. Be sure to ask what type of "coke" your guest would like, should she request one.

(Side note: I learned on a trip to Michigan as a kid that Northerners call it "pop", which I thought was incredibly fun to say, ha!)

-Making sweet tea is an art form. Most of us southern girls are taught as soon as we're old enough to reach the countertop. And, on the off-chance you aren't a sweet tea connoisseur, just swing by Chick-Fil-A or McAlister's. They make a fabulous sweet tea that'll knock your Jimmy Choos clean off.

-We enjoy dressing up for football games. In fact, a tailgate is the perfect time to show off your presh new peep-toe pumps (yes, we wear heels to games) or a darling little shift dress.

-We're not the damsels in distress the television shows and movies portray us as. In fact, we're pretty darn tough when we need to be.

-It's not ya'll. It's y'all.

-We address everyone as "ma'am" and "sir". It's just how it is down here.

-Biscuits take the place of rolls on the dinner table, most of the time.

-We love to monogram. Everything.
-We have a penchant for personalized stationary. Extra points if it's letterpress.

-We know the lyrics to at least one Johnny Cash song.

-We like voluminous hair. And hair poofage. Duh.

-Leaving the house without (at least) mascara is uncommon. We like our make-up, fo' sho'

-We like our boys with an accent. It's twice as nice if it's a Southern drawl : ) (But hey, just about any cool accent is sexy, no?)

-We know our football. I mean, we KNOW our football. It's true; down here, the SEC reigns supreme and we love it. We may look prissy, but honey we can discuss the art of "play callin'" with the best of 'em.

........................................

So what's the point (other than the entertainment factor) of this Southern-themed post? Well, get ready girls, because next week is dedicated to all things Southern, with "Celebrating Southern". We'll talk food, wine, weddings, hair, make-up, fashions...all of it with a theme of "Southern-ness".

And here's the best part...each day, you can link up with me! 1) Just write a post about the topics below each day; 2) enter your link; and 3) post the button at the head of your post so peeps will know where to go find other regional posts.

You don't have to be Southern to participate, though. Just customize your posts to fit your region of the globe! I always love learning about new places.

  2. I had to laugh about the coke comment. Up in my part of the north we call it soda, not pop. That's just silly.

Then again, we call a sub a "hoagie" and that gets some looks.

  3. Love this!! I'll definitely be linking up.

Oh, and THANK YOU for posting the correct spelling of "y'all". It irks me when people spell it wrong.

It's clearly a contraction of the words "you" and "all". So, it's "y'all". Otherwise, it would be yo'all. Yay for correct spellings!

    #smh end rant. ;)

  8. LOVE this idea! As a Northern Transplant in the land of Dixie I can't wait to write about this stuff! Thanks for the creative push girl!

P.S. I don't say Pop, I say SODA, unless I'm talking about a specific drink. I will say "I need a soda" when I'm not sure about what I want. Then I will often say "I need a Coke." if I want the drink of the gods.

P.S.S. The "dress up" for football thing I thought was SO strange, but now, I realize how awesome it is! I'm a converted soul! I only wear my tshirts if I'm bumming around the house for the game.

  11. I am thrilled about this link-up!!! I've always loved being a Southern girl but not until adulthood did I begin to appreciate my Southern roots, manners and lifestyle it has taught me! Can't wait!

  12. Oooh fun! I love being southern! I'm from Georgia! Now I live in Florida which yes is very south but NOT southern. Sometimes people just don't get my monogramming everything and cute stationary I have to have! Can't wait to see all your posts!

  14. All of this is SO true, and you never realize just how unique and special it is until you move around every few years with the military. Each region of our country is so distinct and special, but the traditions and lifestyle of the South have always been my favorite, and Alabama reigns as the favorite place I lived growing up. Followed closely by Montana of course :)

  15. Oh Lordy, I am SO excited to participate in this series! I grew up in South Carolina, but am living in Tampa now, until I finish law school. I didn't realize until I moved here that FL is in the south, but it's definitely not "southern!"

  18. I just might have to participate in this fun! :)

Of course most of my week will be seeing what you have written from the "Southern" Stand point.

Sadly, I have lived in California my whole life and I didnt take the opportunity to move south when I had the chance..but never-the-less I still act as southern belle-ish as I can in California. I seriously think I was from the South in my Past life. :) haha

    Thanks for Sharing!!
This will be a fun week!!

  19. Love this! So the monogram is a southern thing, finally makes since! My other half is from Arkansas and when we first started dating I couldn't figure out why he had monogrammed pillowcases. Always made me laugh, like he was concerned someone would take his pillows.

Icebox is southern right? I always tease him about this one.

  20. Ohhh man this is going to be hella fun! I may look a tad silly with a Celebrating Southern picture above all my Northerner/NYC lingo but hey it'll still be fun.

  21. Erin- It will be hella fun! Glad you're joining up!

  22. In the northeast we call it 'soda'. If you say you want a coke then we'll give you a Coca Cola. If what you really want is a Dr.Pepper than you have to say Dr.Pepper because we won't think of asking what specific type of "coke" you want! :)
